WorkSafe Victoria Updating WorkSafe Industry Codes (WIC's)

WorkSafe Victoria is considering updating the industry classification system that it uses to classify Victorian workplaces.

Why is WorkSafe planning considering updating this system?

Since the introduction of the current system in 1985, new materials, technologies and production techniques have been adopted which affect the way in which industry and business operates. New industries have also emerged, such as information and communications technology industry.
An updated system will better reflect current business practices and activities being undertaken in workplaces across Victoria.

How would the updated system work?

The current system mainly uses the final product produced or service provided as the basis for classifying employers.
The updated system will primarily use the production processes that are carried out in the workplace to classify employers. That is, how goods and services are produced or provided.
For example, the current system only considers the type of vegetable that is grown, whereas the updated system will consider whether a vegetable is grown outdoors or under cover.

The following table illustrates key differences between the two systems:

Current Industry Classification System Updated Industry Classification System
Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing & Hunting Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing

What will this mean for my premium?

Revising the classification system means that every workplace in Victoria will be assigned an updated industry classification that best reflects the predominant activities that are currently undertaken at the workplace.
The industry classification determines the industry rate that will then be used in the calculation of your injury insurance premium.

What do I need to do?

In most case, you will not need to do anything. WorkSafe is currently talking with employers and gathering information to determine whether to move to the new system. You will be advised of any changes to your classification before they take effect.
